Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Since the first lecture I attended, we were taught about definition and understanding of creativity. In this post, I would like to write about novelty, innovation and invention that comes together with creativity that brings significance to our society today.

I want to share a phrase quoted by lecturer in the slides that says,
"Being creative is seeing the same thing as everybody else but thinking of something different"
(Shekerjian, D. 1990)

This phrase quite make sense to me because although everyone is looking at the same thing like what we did but everyone is thinking differently and imagine it in different way. This can be explain in a simpler way.

......Just think of a pencil......

Everyone will comes out with different kind of pencil, with difference in brands, length, colours, quality, quantity or some even think of a pencil with broken lids.
This shows that everyone have their own imagination although we are talking about the same things.

Novelty
The definition gave by the lecturer says that novelty is the quality of being new. It explains that novelty exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals or groups. Someone cannot blame that he/she knows everything and judge thing from that point but instead, everyone will judge something based on their perceptions on how they look upon that particular things.

Innovation
Innovation is the process of improving something that already existing into something new. How to be called as innovation is that the idea or thoughts have to be satisfy specific neeeds like economic cost and people will pay for it.
This can explain what Thomas Edison did. He never create light bulb but innovate light bulb becoming more practical, economical and safe to use.

Invention
Inventors are people who take existing knowledge and create new ideas. It usually comes together with novelty, creativity and innovation, where they rely on each other in order to create something new for the society.
